What is Saturate and Group, and what are best practices, tools and online templates for teams and organizations?
Definition of Saturate and Group
Saturate and Group is part of the innovation design thinking process in which the designers of a product or service create a big collage of observations, insights gleaned from stakeholder interviews or other interactions, personal experiences, organizational data, notes and drawings about a specific topic or opportunity. In reviewing this information, an innovation team arrive at deeper insights into an opportunity for a new product or service by finding connections between disparate data points.
Description of Saturate and Group
The purpose of the Saturate and Group method is to visualize the information needed to make a product and service. For many people, being able to get all of the available information out into a place where everyone can see it allows more meaningful grouping and connection-making of vast amounts of information to identify the core features of the design.
In order to use Saturate and Group, post-it notes with key information or pictures are typically placed onto a wall or workspace. This can also be done digitally using various software tools. To synthesize the information, search for commonalities in the data including patterns, themes or other types of connection-points. Relationships might also come about as different pieces of information are generated. After grouping the disparate insights, continue searching for relationships between groups. As themes emerge, consider discussing the relationships between the individual data points that led to the creation of the theme to determine if additional insights or conclusions about the design can be gleaned.
Tools & Templates
The tools teams can use to guide Saturate and Group processes are physical stickie notes and white boards or digital communication and collaboration software.
