Performance Support is a simple, easily understood electronic or paper material that aids employees in refreshing or enhancing new skills acquired during an organizational change program. Performance Support is used as a supplement to training created for the change program. The purpose of Performance Support is to provide references for employees to use when implementing new skills, solving unfamiliar problems, or modifying their work practices.
What is Performance Support, and what are best practices, tools and templates for teams and organizations?
Definition of Performance Support
Description of Performance Support
Performance Support tools are particularly relevant during periods of organizational change, where employees are inundated with information during training. However, as training is often an isolated event, employees frequently need to be reminded of what they learned or prepared to encounter a situation that was not covered in the training and need additional information; knowledge of both kinds should be provided in performance support tools. Additionally, employees should not be limited in when they are able acquire information related to the change or any other organizationally relevant topic, increasing the necessity of Performance Support.
In order to create tools that have the greatest utility to employees, the tools should have three critical characteristics:
- Convenient – Performance Support materials should be easy to use and to transport so that they are readily accessible wherever the employee may be. Many organizations prefer to use electronic performance support systems as many employees already have a mobile device that can be used to access the tools.
- User-friendly – Performance Support materials should be easy to locate and search through whether or not they are online.
- Relevant – Performance Support materials should always be kept current with the most up-to-date information regarding the change program or any aspect of organizational functioning that the support tools supplement. Additionally, these tools should consist of concise and explicit instructions.
Tools & Templates
Performance Support tools are often developed as web-based online resources, accessible by mobile devices and computers. Some materials may be developed as training materials and shared in presentations, spreadsheets, or other documents.
