Just in Time allows companies to reduce inefficiency and waste through a tightly integrated manufacturing and production system that relies on the ability to order and receive inventory only at the time it is needed. When it first emerged, it represented a dramatic change from the predominant, “just-in-case” production system, in which large inventories of supplies were maintained as a safety measure. For Just in Time to be successful, companies must have a seamless production process in place, including continuous and flexible production, dependable suppliers, accurate forecasts of demand, high-quality manufacturing, employee coordination, involvement and collaboration, and machinery that doesn’t break down, among other factors. The primary concern with Just in Time is the potential for the supply chain to interrupt the entire production process when there is a delay in receiving a necessary supply. Without the raw materials that are necessary for fabrication, companies can potentially lose significant amounts of revenue and fail to meet customer demand. Despite these concerns, Just in Time has been replicated across the world, enabling companies to achieve dramatic savings and reductions in inventory.
