What is Growth Mindset, and what are best practices, tools and online templates for teams and organizations?
Definition of Growth Mindset
A Growth Mindset is a particular way of thinking that involves believing that one is not born with a fixed amount of intelligence but rather their intelligence grows over time through hard work and learning from others. Beliefs about intelligence are critical for how people respond to setbacks and failures. Those who hold a growth mindset are more likely to put themselves in challenging situations in order to develop their skills and learn from their mistakes.
Description of Growth Mindset
While much of the Growth Mindset research has been applied to school-aged children, in organizations a growth mindset describes a culture that embraces and encourages change and innovation. When employees are willing to think outside of the box and engage in actions that are not completely in-line with the company’s strategy, they will be able to learn from these challenges and the set-backs they face along the way and create more efficient and productive processes, products and services.
Growth Mindset can also be applied to setting performance goals. In contrast to having a “fixed” mindset, employees who have a growth mindset approach their performance objectives as opportunities to reach new levels of skill and mastery in their position. Further, Growth Mindset individuals use more creative and innovative approaches to their roles because they believe they have the ability to address unfamiliar challenges and the belief they can learn what they don’t yet know. To fully utilize Growth Mindset, managers should set learning goals as well as performance goals for their employees. This action demonstrates senior leaders’ encouragement of approaching goals with an open-mindset.
