Definition of Employee Engagement Surveys
Description of Employee Engagement Surveys
Employee Engagement Surveys are detailed surveys distributed to employees which measure their level of engagement in the company. Employee engagement is the extent to which employees are passionate, committed and put extra effort into making sure their work is of the highest quality. Employee engagement surveys must be used as a benchmark against other organizations if they are going to provide useful results. Without this kind of comparison, it is difficult to know what you are measuring and whether the results are good or bad.
A useful Employee Engagement Survey must be lengthy enough, usually 40-50 questions at a minimum, to determine not only whether employees are engaged, but also why they are engaged. They must also cover a wide range of topics related to employee engagement. There are two types of employee engagement:
- Engagement with the organization – this measures how engaged employees are with the organization as a whole, and therefore, how confident they feel about senior management.
- Engagement with a manager – this is a more specific measure of how employees relate to their direct supervisors. It measures whether employees feel valued, receive fair feedback, and whether they feel like they have a strong working relationship with their direct manager.
Surveys must accurately measure both types of employee engagement in order to get an accurate snapshot of the state of employee engagement.
